On this day… Pakistan lifted the World Cup for the first time in their history (1992)

For certainty, the extraordinary day of March 25th 1992 will live long in the memory of all those Pakistanis- whether sports lovers or not. It was to be a day engraved with emotions, tears and joy…

Led by the magnificence of the great Imran Khan, there was nothing at all for Pakistan to fear at the start of the tournament but after winning only once in their opening five matches…Pakistan were on the brink of getting eliminated from the tournament unless they could miraculously turn fortunes around.

Indeed fortunes did turn around as a thrashing of Australia kickstarted the ‘impossible’. Wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka followed as Pakistan booked their place in the semi-finals. Their reward for their last-gasp heroics: a match against the round-robin table-toppers New Zealand, a side who they had already beaten in the round robin stage en route to the semis.  Despite, NZ skipper Martin Crowe’s 91 runs, Pakistan (not for the first time) came from behind to break the hearts of the co-hosts as 264 runs was eventually enough to edge their opponents. England’s comfortable victory over South Africa meant that they would be Pakistan’s opponents in the final but it was the question of whether Pakistan could replicate their heroics in their past few matches here against England…

Excellent batting from the likes of Imran Khan and Javed Miniadad set Pakistan on their way as England were given 250 to beat for the world title. But when you had your batters facing the tricky bowling of Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Akram, your dreams were fading fast from an England point of view. Both bowlers were instrumental as a combined total of six wickets had now set Pakistan in a pole position to claim the world title.

The fans could almost taste the glory from the tip of their tongues but when Rameez Raja caught Richard Illingworth out there was nothing else on the field other than tears and joy as Pakistan were officially crowned the cricket world champions!

Sadly, for most fans there was a downside after the final as they had to see their legend Imran Khan retire from the game but of course what a way it was to put the icing on the cake- leading your nation to the World Cup…
